The technical name of the material is PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) or more commonly methacrylate.

The best quality of PMMA sheets is certainly obtained by casting an acrylic "syrup" obtained by polymerizing the MMA monomer in a reactor; In other words, the material is originally in a liquid state and to produce the sheets or blocks from which the spheres will then be obtained, a small amount of catalyst is added to start the solidification reaction. The quantity of catalyst used therefore becomes the determining factor for the transparency of the final product. To reduce costs, some manufacturers increase the amount of catalyst in order to speed up the reaction. The result is therefore a block obtained in much less hours but which on the other hand loses transparency since the mixture is much richer in catalyst and therefore less crystalline.
